THE ONE TO SEE

Coventry Cathedral

Coventry's old cathedral was bombed flat in one night in November 1940. They left the ruins exactly as they were, roofless and open to the sky, and built the new one right alongside it.

The two buildings together tell the story better than any exhibition could. Walking between them is one of those experiences you don't quite expect. Quietly brilliant, and free to visit.

Four worth the drive

Trebah Garden

Trebah in Cornwall runs down a steep ravine to a private beach on the Helford River. Sub-tropical planting, tree ferns, giant gunnera, and a stream running through the middle. Surprisingly lush for this far north. A great spot for a family day out with proper walking involved

Floors Castle

Floors Castle sits above the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders, the largest inhabited castle in Scotland, though it doesn't feel showy about it. The Victorian walled garden is worth the visit on its own. If you're heading north of the border, this is the one to plan around.

Chavanage House

Chavenage House in Gloucestershire appeared in Poldark as Trenwith, and it's easy to see why they chose it. An Elizabethan manor barely changed since the 1570s, still lived in by the same family. You can visit most of it on selected days. One of those places that genuinely earns the comparison to a film set.

Abbotsford

Sir Walter Scott's home and obsession for the last 20 years of his life. He designed the house himself and filled it with thousands of books, historical curiosities, and objects collected from across Scotland. The gardens run down to the River Tweed. One of those houses that tells you everything about the person who built it.

Hidden Gem

St Winefride in Holywell

One of Britain’s oldest pilgrimage sites, St Winefride’s Well has been drawing visitors for over 1,300 years. Legend tells how Saint Winefride was beheaded, and where she fell, a spring miraculously rose, still flowing today.

The beautifully carved Gothic shrine, built under Henry VII, feels more like a hidden chapel than a well. Its waters, long believed to have healing powers, remain central to the experience, with visitors still stepping into the icy pool.

Remarkably, the site survived the English Reformation, making it a rare link to Britain’s medieval past.

Often overlooked, this is a place where myth, history, and quiet continuity meet.

(Large and Small)

Wilton House

If you're into Bridgerton, Wilton House might look familiar. Featured as one of the show’s opulent settings, you can walk the same halls and gardens where the drama unfolds.

But it’s not just Bridgerton. Wilton House has been a favourite filming location for decades, appearing in everything from Pride & Prejudice and The Young Victoria to Tomb Raider and The Crown.

Worth a visit in its own right, the film connections are just a bonus.
